But the retail giant backpedaled this week, saying higher prices on many grocery items and household staples like paper goods have stuck. Food prices climbed 2.6%, fueled by a 5.1% jump in prices for food away from home, a category that includes restaurant meals and vending machine purchases. That gives their makers the ability to keep raising prices to mitigate higher costs, even as their volume drops. Even some of the biggest U.S. brands have signaled that consumers' tolerance of higher prices has worn thin.

PepsiCo got a bump to fourth quarter profits thanks in part to lower charges and continued price hikes, but higher prices have weakened consumer demand for the company's snacks and drinks. Volume for Frito-Lay North America fell 2% in the final quarter of the year, and beverages North America in North America slid 6%. Volume fell 8% in the Quaker Foods North America unit, as the division dealt with a recall. Pepsi has wrestled with higher prices and how to pass those costs along, raising prices by double-digit percentages for several quarters. Its profits are up, though higher prices have dragged down sales as people trade down to cheaper brands.

Pepsi's organic revenue, which excludes acquisitions and divestitures, rose 4.5% in the quarter, helped by higher prices. For 2024, Pepsi now anticipates organic revenue growth of at least 4% and core constant currency earnings per share growth of at least 8%. The company previously forecast organic revenue growth on the high end of 4% to 6% and core constant currency earnings per share growth in the high single digits. Microplastics have been found in fish species and in Buffalo's drinking water supply, the lawsuit alleges. For years, customers stopping at Casey’s General Stores, a convenience store chain in the Midwest, hadn’t thought twice about snagging a soda and a bag of Lay’s or Doritos chips. But over the past year, as the price of a bag of chips soared and some customers felt squeezed by the high cost of gas and other expenses, they began picking up Casey’s less-expensive store brand. So Casey’s began stocking more of its own chips, in a variety of new flavors. With supply chain issues affecting what was on the shelves, people were buying basically whatever they could find. And they kept buying even as prices soared when the food and beverage brands raised prices to maintain their profit levels while still covering rising ingredient and labor costs.

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Thursday said he thinks the upcoming earnings season might be tough thanks to continued inflation, as well as new weight loss drugs seeding fear for investors in the food and beverage sector. Cramer said the market is facing an "unforgiving backdrop" that may cause many on Wall Street to interpret earnings negatively. He also also highlighted PepsiCo , one of the first big companies to report earnings this season. Cramer also said many might see PepsiCo's price-to-earnings multiple as too high, trading at more than 20 times earnings. However, Cramer said investors should still be wary of being too negative.

In a new report by The Food Industry Association, a majority, 54%, of shoppers say they plan to buy "much more" or "somewhat more" private-label brands in the future. Only 26% of those surveyed said the same of national brand groceries, such as Charmin, Tide or Frito-Lay. Private-label groceries at big-box and warehouse retailers — such as Target's Good & Gather and Costco's Kirkland Signature — have been slowly gaining favor with consumers, according to data from Morningstar. Fifty-one percent of those who plan to buy more store-brand groceries said they would do so because of taste and 47% said because of quality. Brands like Costco's Kirkland Signature are considered "cool," says Michael Krupski, a clinical assistant professor of operations management and strategy at the University at Buffalo.

The quantity of drinks and snacks sold is slumping, however, and anti-obesity drugs are just starting to make their mark. The head of Walmart’s (WMT.N) U.S. drugstores told Bloomberg that customers taking Ozempic, Wegovy and others are pulling back on junk-food purchases. For two years, Coca-Cola has been raising prices on its drinks to combat higher costs. But the company said Wednesday it's done hiking prices this year in developed markets like the U.S. and Europe.
